What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?
DBT is an evidence-based therapy utilizing four primary modes of treatment: Individual therapy, group skills training, in -the-moment phone/text coaching and DBT therapist consultation team to treat individuals who have difficulty managing emotions. DBT was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and is considered the most evidence-based treatment for this population. Further research has shown DBT’s effectiveness in other populations such as eating disorders, depression, and PTSD.
DBT utilizes a behavioral approach that analyzes situations and specifically targets behaviors that interfere with meeting goals and solving problems in one’s life. Interventions are then targeted towards solving the problems that are most relevant to meet one’s “life worth living” goals.
